This biography, published twenty years after Lawrence's death, created a storm of criticism because it revealed his illegitimacy and his tendency to create myths about himself. His friends, of whom there were many, rallied to his defense. The Introductory Letter here is to Alister Kershaw, who suggested that the biography be written. Aldington lived another seven years after the book appeared, but his life was plagued by the controversy. His health also declined. To help, Kershaw bought a house at Sury-en-Vaux (France) for him to live in, and there he died in 1962.
