To understand modern Italians the author begins in the 9th Century with Charlemagne who kicked off a history of violence and disruption. Perhaps then it is understandable that the people who live on the peninsula now, although they can be charming and vital, are also often corrupt and infuriating. This interesting analysis deals with many aspects of contemporary Italian life, such as the influence of the Catholic Church and the passion for football. There is also the importance of the family which the author says is “praised and honored at every turn.” And yet he continues: ”For while it is true that family loyalties in Italy do remain extremely strong (and may even be getting stronger), the traditional family is fast declining.”

This is a most interesting account of the political and religious bedlam in 15th Century Italy. Among the more colorful characters was the psychopathic King of Naples, Ferdinand I (known as Ferrante): “…when visited by a mercenary commander who had long been his partner in crime, Ferrante had entertained his guest lavishly for weeks before abruptly having him strangled.” He was also known for a macabre prison-museum wherein the embalmed corpses of defeated enemies were kept next to cages in which live prisoners were starved to death or allowed to go insane.

Parks, Tim: An Italian Education, The Further Adventures of an Expatriate in Verona. New York: Grove Press. 1995. First edition. Boards. Pp. (x), 338, (iv). Fine copy in dust-jacket. $22.00

This is a most charming book by an Englishman who lives in a small village near Verona. He is married and has two children. So much of what he writes about centers on his son. In this case he has taken him to a nursery school where the fees have recently been raised. There is a notice up about this which includes a table listing how much everyone has been assessed. He realizes with chagrin that he is paying the top rate, so he watches as the people arrive with their toddlers. Some are in small Fiats, some on bicycles, some on Vespas; but several others come in flashy BMWs and Mercedes. It leads to this observation: “One of the most characteristic Italian emotions, it seems to me, is that mixture of envy, perplexity, and wonder that comes when one realizes that others are working the system far more effectively that oneself—sai com’é—this together with the knowledge that they are doing so and will continue to do so with absolute impunity.”
