Roy Campbell and his family were living in Toledo in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War broke out. The situation became so extremely dangerous that they were obliged to flee. They escaped cowering in the back of a truck marked with a skull and bones warning which indicated that it normally collected corpses. But once clear of the city their travails were not at an end. They had a particularly frightening encounter with a woman milicien on the way to Madrid. Then they had to be smuggled through enemy lines to the port of Valencia by the famous ‘Spanish Pimpernel,’ Captain Christopher Lance. Roy Campbell's poems on Spain, and some others, are here beautifully presented, both in their original English and with Spanish translations. The Preface is by the American private press printer who became one of Roy's publishers following an interesting series of events.
