Paul Burrell was in service with the British Royal Family. Eventually he became the butler for Princess Diana. But the knives were out for him, and after her death he was accused of stealing her possessions. His memoir is particularly well written and is wonderfully fascinating, if also highly indiscreet. One of his interesting stories concerns an ‘arrivals-and-departures logbook’. It seems that when he was serving at Highgrove in Gloucestershire he recorded the names of the guests who had been invited for lunch or dinner, to aid the preparations which had to be undertaken by the staff. Frequently, there were such entries as: “4 for lunch—HRH [His Royal Highness, i.e. Prince Charles], Mrs. Parker Bowles, Mr. Neil Foster, and Mr. Vernon Russell-Smith.” The logbook was kept out in the open in the pantry where Princess Diana found it. As she was often not at Highgrove it became highly interesting reading for her, and in this way she learned that her husband was seeing a great deal of Camilla Parker Bowles. Eventually Charles learned about the existence of the logbook too. What his reaction was I will leave you to find out!

The authors were the Royal Correspondents for The Daily Mail, a down-market tabloid which normally favors the Conservative Party and is much frowned upon by intellectuals who prefer The Independent or The Guardian. Or at least that is what some of them might want others to believe; undoubtedly backsliding occurs in private.

A highly readable account of the Windsors which suggests that the Duchess handed over secrets to the Germans. It is possible, though, that she did not understand what she was doing—or the effects it would have. However, her bitterness against the Royal Family was such that in effect she acted against British interests.
